Hiked it at the end of January. Honestly, we saw a Nissan Altima in the lot so they made it through the deep ruts in the dirt road. We packed snacks and enjoyed the view. Had to go through the East mesa trail since the main road was closed. This strenuous trail leads through a sculpted landscape to a forested mesa on Baldy Mountain with spectacular views over Zion Canyon and the Virgin River. On this day (December 2017), I explored/hiked Observation Point at Zion National Park in the state of Utah. We just got back from a southern Utah trip and did both Observation Pt from East Mesa using the shuttle and we did West Rim trail about 1 mile past Scout's Lookout (we only went up the first set of chains to Angel's Landing.). I did this hike at the end of September 2010. Was definitely worth it. The switchbacks at the beginning of the trail were the hardest part, and as the valley floor shrunk away, I found myself sucking in air and sweating by the end of them, really wondering if I could complete the challenge. I really love this trail - I know Angels Landing is more in vogue but this one has so many spectacular sections that deliver on amazing Zion views. Zion National Park Since there is no overnight camping at Observation Point, this Zion National Park site is a place to sit down, relax, drink some water, have lunch, and marvel at the canyon, with both rims stretched out in front of you. From this spot, you can look out over Zion National Park, with a view down to Angels Landing. Much of the way to the plateau is a series of switchbacks. The hike can be connected with the Hidden Canyon Trail, the East Mesa Trail, or the East Rim Trail, all of which are fantastic ways to see more of the park. Nice, relatively flat hike. A lot of them. Alternate Route: You can reach Observation Point by hiking the East Rim Trail. If you’re not so much a fan of hiking as you are of good views, then you’ll be pleased to know that this route is much quicker and easier than the traditional route. Observation Point (via East Mesa Trail) Observation Point offers one of the most stunning views of Zion’s main canyon, however, getting there can be a bit of a challenge. We went in January, so if you come during the winter months, definitely bring traction for your shoes otherwise you wont be able to complete this trail. Enjoy the sweeping vista that is the main section Zion National Park. As you pass hikers coming up, some having difficulty, you'll have an inner glow for having conquered this tough hike to the Point! Fees are $35 per vehicle or $30 per motorcycle. This trail is currently open via the East Mesa trailhead. It is a stunning view. This is the best hike in Zion hands down. This is one of the most amazing views. You will not be disappointed when you reach the top. Did this hike in 2015 and it was amazing then and I’m sure still amazing now. NOTE: This trail is currently closed due to rockfall. Don't you feel great for having conquered this hike? Consider Adding the Hike to Observation Point. Forget overcrowded and touristy Angels Landing! Here’s better directions: go down highway 9 towards the East Zion entranced, take a left onto North fork then another Left onto Twin nose road then a right on beaver trail. a beautiful trail. This strenuous trail leads to the flora-rich mesa top of Baldy Mountain, rewarding hikers with magnificent south-facing views of Zion Canyon, Angels Landing and the Virgin River below. There were times close to the top when I thought I wasn't going to make it due to the heat and altitude, but the top viewpoint was so worth it and I felt like I had really earned it. From the exposed, rocky outcropping, Observation Point looks over Angels Landing and the entire canyon.
